Smoked mackerel toast is a delicious and satisfying dish that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch, or even a light dinner. I first discovered this dish while visiting a Scandinavian-themed café in Edinburgh and fell in love with its simplicity and incredible flavor. 

The dish is essentially an upgraded version of classic tuna mayo on toast, featuring smoked mackerel fillets instead of tuna. Mackerel is a fatty fish that’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, making it not only delicious but also a healthy choice. 

This recipe is easy to put together in just a few minutes, making it a great option for busy mornings or lazy weekends. The smoked mackerel is mixed with mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice to create a flavorful and creamy spread that’s perfect for slathering on top of toasted whole wheat bread.

Ingredients

Adjust Servings
¼ red onion
1 tablespoon of mayonnaise
1 smoked mackerel fillet (skin removed)
1 dill pickles (finely sliced)
1 teaspoon of mustard
Sourdough bread
2 hard boiled eggs
Mixed salad leaves
Pickled red cabbage

Directions

1.

Hard boil 2 eggs (boil for 10-12 minutes).

Toast a slice of sourdough bread.

Combine the raw onion, mayo, mackerel, dill pickle, and mustard in a bowl. Stir thoroughly until the mackerel fillet has completely broken apart and you have a tuna mayonnaise-like consistency.

Spread the mackerel mix over the slice of sourdough toast.
